Resisted heating is when a material is heated by friction of electrical currents. As sand is warmed by the electricity passing through, the generated heat can now be used as a source of energy.
A team of young Finnish engineers figured out how to turn sand into energy, converting them into batteries. They believe that this can solve their storage problem in a low-impactful way. They completed their first commercial installation made from sand and is now produced in their local power plant. Low-costing electricity warms the sand up to 500 C by using resistive heating and generates hot air. This air is circulated in the sand which means it can be used as a heat exchanger. Batteries made right now have Lithium, which is an expensive material, and can leave a large, physical footprint, but sand batteries can be the solution to that.
