Sand Batteries

As climate change starts to worsen, we need more ways to obtain energy while preventing the warmth of the Earth. As there are many types of eco-friendly ways like wind energy, solar energy, and more, there is yet another way to stay eco-friendly. Sand is a perfect way to gain energy and make them into batteries. Scientists discovered if you pile 100 tons of sand into a steel container. (4 x 7) This sand can get heated up by using wind and solar energy, and turn into a new source of energy. This is called resistive heating. Click Here!

Resistive Heating

Resisted heating is when a material is heated by friction of electrical currents. As sand is warmed by the electricity passing through, the generated heat can now be used as a source of energy.

How did it all start?

A team of young Finnish engineers figured out how to turn sand into energy, converting them into batteries. They believe that this can solve their storage problem in a low-impactful way. They completed their first commercial installation made from sand and is now produced in their local power plant. Low-costing electricity warms the sand up to 500 C by using resistive heating and generates hot air. This air is circulated in the sand which means it can be used as a heat exchanger. Will these batteries come to the point where they replace the original factory made batteries? As there is still a long way to go, having this battery normalized throughout the world can solve many problems once it all works out. Click Here!

What can this solve?

Batteries made right now have Lithium, which is an expensive material, and can leave a large, physical footprint, but sand batteries can be the solution to that. Sand can store energy for several months, which means the batteries made by it can last a while, maybe even more then some batteries, and can be used at a lower cost. The sand battery does not require any new, raw materials and can withstand any power surges which makes this battery quite beneficial. It is also very efficient with its storing of energy, which can greatly increase the batteries efficiency of the system. Click Here!

The sand battery can be a solution to the world in many ways. It is quite eco-friendly as it doesn’t affect climate change, and doesn't leave a big footprint like Lithium. These batteries can be as efficient and long-lasting as a normal battery as well. As we are not to that point yet, engineers are figuring out to make all this work, and once it all does, it can be very beneficial.
